NIL Income and Taxes: What Athletes Should Know Before the Money Moves

Tim Frank, EA • October 1, 2026 • Educational information

NIL income can take several forms

NIL arrangements can involve cash, property, services, endorsements, appearances, content creation and other compensation. Taxable income generally must be reported even when a payer does not issue a W-2 or 1099.

Track income and expenses as they happen

Athletes should maintain their own records of payments, non-cash benefits and expenses connected to earning NIL income. Organized records make tax preparation and planning easier.

Plan before spending the gross amount

A contract amount is not the same thing as spendable after-tax cash. Building a tax reserve and estimating federal and state obligations early can reduce surprises.

Planning point: Tax outcomes depend on individual facts and circumstances. This is educational information, not individualized tax advice.
